On Saturday 3 December 2011 at 9.55 AM the roof of the Deutschlandhalle, a Berlin landmark, was demolished! This was the beginning of the last act of the controversial demolition of one of the most important event arenas – nomen est omen – which was also a mirror of contemporary German history. What will remain are memories of questionable as well as remarkable political events, spectacular concerts and shows with international artists, stars and starlets.
After the last remains have been cleaned up in the Spring of 2012 the Deutschlandhalle as a building and cultural monument will have disappeared from the Berlin landscape.
The Berlin artist Matthias Koeppel, the former radio show host Henning Vosskamp and the museum curator Uwe Boettcher initiated a campaign entitled “Deutschlandhalle Adé” commencing with an artistic event called “The Last Supper for the Deutschlandhalle” which took place on 11 September 2011.
The next step in 2012 will be presented to the public in an informative, entertaining and exciting “Exhibition” of the Deutschlandhalle and its chequered past with its impressive history of events.
The aim of the initiators in cooperation with the Messe Berlin GmbH, the Berlin architects of “City Cube Berlin” as well as an interested public is to develop a “Cultural Think-about-it Monument Deutschlandhalle” and to integrate it into a permanent exhibition in the new fair ground building.
